UAE Unveils Strategic Roadmap for Green Intellectual Property to Drive Sustainable Innovation

The UAE Ministry of Economy has introduced a new roadmap for Green Intellectual Property (IP) aimed at accelerating sustainable innovation and fostering technology localization. This strategic three-month initiative strengthens the nation’s IP framework, reinforcing its commitment to a greener, more environmentally conscious economy.

During a media briefing at its Dubai headquarters, the Ministry of Economy outlined the objectives of the Green IP roadmap, emphasizing its critical role in advancing national sustainability initiatives.

Green Intellectual Property (IP) Aligned with ‘We the UAE 2031’ Vision

His Excellency Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri, Minister of Economy and Chairman of the UAE Circular Economy Council, highlighted the UAE’s visionary leadership in launching transformative initiatives within the intellectual property sector. He noted that this roadmap marks a significant step in positioning the UAE as a global leader in green technology.

"Thanks to the forward-thinking vision of our leadership, the UAE has successfully introduced qualitative initiatives in the intellectual property sector, establishing it as a fundamental pillar of a resilient and sustainable national economy. Today, we are witnessing another milestone in the evolution of this vital sector," H.E. bin Touq stated.

He further emphasized that the Green IP roadmap serves as a catalyst for increasing awareness around green technology and innovation, offering advanced services and solutions that benefit communities while enhancing the UAE’s global standing in sustainable advancements. These efforts align with the ‘We the UAE 2031’ vision, reinforcing the country’s position among the most innovative economies worldwide.

Aligning with Innovation Month 2025, this initiative underscores the UAE’s ongoing commitment to empowering inventors, entrepreneurs, and thought leaders. The Ministry of Economy will collaborate closely with local environmental stakeholders and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) to execute the roadmap’s objectives and expand opportunities for sustainable innovation.

Strengthening the UAE’s Leadership in Sustainability

H.E. Abdulla Ahmed Al Saleh, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Economy, reaffirmed the UAE’s longstanding commitment to sustainability, underscoring its deep-rooted presence in the nation’s economic and cultural landscape.

"The Green IP roadmap is designed to accelerate the adoption of cutting-edge digital solutions, advanced technologies, and sustainable practices across industries. Our objective is to foster strategic collaborations with universities, research institutions, and innovators to integrate intellectual property protections into green projects, ensuring eco-friendly advancements are safeguarded and incentivized," H.E. Al Saleh stated.

By enhancing legal frameworks and fostering an innovation-driven environment, the roadmap will contribute to elevating the UAE’s ranking on global innovation indices, particularly the Global Innovation Index (GII), solidifying the nation's leadership in sustainable advancements.

Key Objectives of the ‘Green IP’ Roadmap

• Strengthening Legal Protections for Green Innovations – The initiative enhances legal frameworks to safeguard eco-friendly patents amid an increasing number of applications, which reached approximately 3,622 in 2024.
• Accelerating Patent Registrations for Sustainable Technologies – A new program will expedite the registration process for patents related to environmental sustainability and green innovation, targeting an increase in sustainable patent registrations to 8% of total IP filings in the UAE.
• Fostering a Competitive Innovation Ecosystem – The Ministry of Economy invites entrepreneurs, academic institutions, and businesses to leverage the roadmap’s robust IP infrastructure, supporting sustainable research and development.

H.E. Al Saleh reiterated the UAE’s commitment to establishing a globally competitive legislative framework for intellectual property. Recent advancements in industrial property rights, trademarks, and copyright regulations have positioned the UAE as a leader in IP protection and innovation.
